OPPORTUNITIES NEWS & TRENDS!

Online Mega-Sites Continue To Follow Growth Path

Online travel is still a hot sector, if the most recent quarterly results are any indication. InterActiveCorp (IAC), parent of Expedia, Hotels.com and Hotwire, posted better-than-expected quarterly profit, but analysts' concerns about rising marketing costs in its travel units sent its stock lower. IAC said margins at its travel services unit fell as marketing expenses climbed. New York-based IAC, which also owns Home Shopping Network, Ticketmaster and Match.com, posted net income of $38.3 million for the first quarter, compared with a loss of $110.1 million, in the same period a year earlier. First-quarter revenue rose 6 percent, to $1.47 billion from $1.39 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected revenue of $1.44 billion. Operating income before amortization costs, which were chiefly merger-related, rose 14 percent, to $197.6 million from $173.9 million. IAC said its travel growth continued to benefit from positive online and overall travel trends. It said the international, packages and merchant hotel businesses, as well as the inclusion of Hotwire in this year's results, led the growth in the quarter. Travel revenue was up 41 percent on a comparable net basis, while bookings were up 51 percent. International bookings increased by 108 percent, and international revenue was up 79 percent, or 61 percent on a local currency basis. The international business was driven by particularly strong growth in the U.K. and Germany. Improved package offerings, consumer acceptance of the product and Hotels.com's new packages product helped drive packages revenue growth of 73 percent. Merchant hotel business continued its strong growth, with total merchant hotel revenue up 39 percent and total merchant room nights stayed up 36 percent to seven million. Meanwhile, Orbitz announced a profitable first quarter of 2004, benefiting from growth across all major product lines and led by a 141 percent increase in non-air travel revenues, including more hotel and package sales. For the quarter ended March 31, net revenues increased 42 percent to $70.3 million from $49.5 million for the first quarter of 2003. At the same time, the company reported net income of just $1.9 million, which included $1.4 million of non-cash compensation charges relating to an April 2002 restructuring of Orbitz's outstanding stock options. Excluding this non-cash charge of $1.4 million, first quarter 2004 net income would have been $3.3 million. In the first quarter of 2003, Orbitz reported a net loss of $2.4 million. For the first quarter of 2004, gross travel bookings climbed 38 percent to $1.06 billion versus $767.7 million for the same period of 2003. Finally, Priceline said its first quarter 2004 gross travel bookings, which refer to the total dollar value inclusive of taxes and fees of all travel products purchased by consumers, rose 46 percent year-over-year to $360.2 million. Revenues were $224.1 million, a 12 percent increase over first quarter 2003. Gross profit grew 31 percent to $43.4 million, compared to $33 million a year ago. Net income for the first quarter 2004 was $5.1 million.

GDS Opportunity! Strong First Quarter Powers Amadeus

Many analysts view the traditional Global Distribution System companies as dinosaurs, but at least one is not showing any signs of slowing down. Amadeus reported a strong first quarter 2004 reflecting recovery in travel, especially in North America and Asia Pacific. Comparable global reservations for this quarter grew by 9 percent to 112.5 million, excluding German leisure bookings. Revenue was up by 7 percent to 538 million euros. This, together with a limited operating expenses growth of 1 percent, permitted Amadeus to reach a net income figure, including special items, of 71.3 million euros, up almost 40 percent compared with the first quarter 2003. Given those strong results, Amadeus raised its 2004 forecast for net income to 185-195 million euros and now expect bookings to grow by 6 to 7 percent, with a revenue increase of 4 to 7 percent, compared with 2003. Overall bookings for the period were 124 million, an increase of 15.8 percent over the first quarter of 2003. MIDT (Marketing Industry Data Tapes), which track travel agency air reservations worldwide for all GDSs, show Amadeus with a global marketshare of 28.7 percent, 1.3 percentage points ahead of its nearest competitor. The Financial Times also reports that Amadeus, with a strong cash position, may be in the market for acquisitions, including another GDS, such as Worldspan or even Sabre. So keep watch on this company, which may soon be looking to fill more posts, even as some other GDSs cut back.

Airline Opportunity! Southwest Grows to Philadelphia

Southwest Airlines officially unveiled new service from Philadelphia on May 9, with 15 flights. Southwest marked the occasion with a weekend of celebration and promotion in Philadelphia celebrating the arrival of the airline's first aircraft in that city. Southwest's first flight took off just before 7 a.m. Sunday to Chicago. Southwest CEO Herb Kelleher, a Philadelphia native, kicked off the celebration by tapping a giant copy of the Liberty Bell. Southwest's entry also marks the beginning of a major battle for marketshare with US Airways, which unveiled a completely new fare structure late last month to counter the low-cost carrier's entry into the Philadelphia market. Beyond Philadelphia, Southwest will add new daily nonstop service each way between the following cities beginning Aug. 8: One flight between Las Vegas and Islip (Long Island's MacArthur Airport), one flight between Las Vegas and Cleveland, and one flight between Phoenix and Cleveland. The discounted roundtrip fares are available for purchase now through Aug. 8, and are valid for travel through Oct. 29. In addition, Southwest will enhance the existing nonstop service with the following new roundtrip flights, also beginning Aug. 8: One between Las Vegas and Orange County (for a total of four daily), one between Omaha and Phoenix (for a total of three daily), and one between Nashville and Phoenix (for a total of four daily). While many of Southwest's newly created jobs are at low levels, this airline shows no signs of slowing its growth.

Cruise Opportunity! Disney Sets West Coast Sailings

The long-awaited expansion of Disney Cruise Line (DCL) may be about to become a reality. DCL currently has two ships, the Magic and the Wonder. But last week Walt Disney Company said Disney Magic would offer a limited series of 12 seven-night cruises from California next year as part of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland. Many observers believe the move also could lead to a series of permanent West Coast sailings. Disney Magic will sail from Port Canaveral, Fla., through the Panama Canal next year and offer cruises leaving from the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro and stopping at Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas. That could mean more positions could open up for DCL on the West Coast in port facilities. Even better, a number of analysts say DCL has asked European shipyards for bids on two more ships. While no contracts have been signed, it's clear that the line is poised for some major growth.
